Types of DWI Charges

DWI is a serious crime, not only in the state of Texas but throughout the United States. Due to the multitude of scenarios in which an impaired driver may decide it is okay to get behind the wheel, there are many different types of DWI charges that can be applied, each with their own specific set of penalties in the event of conviction. If you have been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, make sure that your DWI attorney is experienced enough to aggressively advocate your concerns in court.

The most well-known types of DWI charges are for first, second and subsequent offenses. Conviction for these charges can carry jail or prison sentences anywhere from a minimum of 3 days in a first time DWI offense to a maximum of 10 years. When a drunk driver causes an accident resulting in injury or death of another victim, convicted offenders can face as much as 20 years in prison and upwards of $10,000 in fines.

There are a number of additional charges that can be applied if the drunk-driver has a passenger less than 15 years of age. Conviction of any of these charges also results in license suspensions that can last years, and many other repercussions that can have a lasting and negative impact on your work, family or social life such as the interlock ignition device, which requires a BAC test in order to make the vehicle operational.
